Alice Again uncovers the man behind Alice in Wonderland. The Off-Broadway production investigates the real story of Lewis Carroll, a controversial figure in literary circles. This is the third iteration of the piece for [playwright Gordon] Farrell, following a two-person version that played San Francisco in 1981, and an expanded Buffalo version in 1992. The play follows [Lewis Carroll] on the day he reunites with the woman who inspired Alice in Wonderland... years after he was forbidden from making contact with her.
- Margaret Hall, Playbill
“Well conceived, charmingly written and moving… ‘Alice Again’ by Gordon Farrell offers an evening that will set you drifting in childhood's streams and make your heart dance a little. 4.5 out of 5 stars!”
– Patricia Donovan, Buffalo News
Gordon Farrell's Alice Again examines the moral grey area between the author of Alice in Wonderland and his muse... The play follows Rev. Charles Dodgson (pen name Lewis Carroll) on the day he reunites with the woman who inspired Alice in Wonderland... Based on his actual diary entries from that day, Dodgson is overwhelmed by his anxiety and imagines a world in which his own characters put him on trial for moral impropriety.
- Stephi Wild, Broadway World
“Get ready for some childhood nostalgia as you watch ‘Alice Again!’ [Playwright Gordon] Farrell’s mix of drama and biography captivates as he takes you through the life of the Rev. Charles Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll… [‘Alice Again’ is] an enlightening and sympathetic view ‘through the looking glass’ at the imaginative genius of Dodgson’s mind.”
– Bethany Gladkowski, Metro Weekend
“’Alice Again’ is color and whimsy and silly music, wrapped up and collated… from chalkboard, to piano, to the never ending arranging and re-arranging of words, even as he tells a simple tale, [‘Alice Again’] remains true to the overall lunacy that Carroll seemed to live with on a daily basis.”
– Peter Runfola, Nightlife.
